In seven months, thru 10 countries and twenty flights.

A few facts.

1. Things lost on tour : one hairbrush, two tee shirts.

2. Things found on tour : happiness and adventure.

3. Things lost in transit : nothing.

4. Things stolen on trip : Nothing. The negative media portrayal of faraway places is quite sad really, considering the crime rate on our doorstep.

5. Flight delays out of twenty : One 2 hour delay in Thailand.

6. Train delays : one two hour train delay on a 14hr Thailand train.

7. Annoyances: Mosquitoes, which disappeared after two months. And the UK election results, which will take considerably longer.

8. Strangest destination : Easter Island.

9. Most expensive destination : Australia.

10. Best Scenery : The US National Parks. (take your pick)

11. Hottest places : Perth, Australia 41 c (105.8 F). Phoenix 41.6 c (107 F)

12. Wettest Place : Fraser Island, Australia.

13. Best Tour : Alcatraz, followed by Macchu Pichu.

14. Best Activities : Snorkelling in Thailand. Tree gliding in Ecuador.

15. Most Starry night : Grand Canyon, 7000 of them, official. (though I didn’t count them, but I did see them).

16. Best Accomodation : Peru and USA.

17. Worst sleep : A planned overnight stay at Santiago airport, due to a late arrival and very early next day departure.

18. Best Sleep : Personally, I didn’t get one. Didn’t want one. Not bothered.

19. Shiniest thing purchased : Gold nuggets in Kalgoorlie, Australia.

20. Most pleasant country visited : Lao.

21. Funniest things : Two adults, two children trying to sleep in same room, at the same time ( even though it happened over two hundred times, it was still funny)

Isabella killing a cockroach in a panic.

Sebastian’s kill rate with the mosquitoes.

Sebastian and Isabella’s initial deflation when being told we weren’t really going to pick up stones and pebbles, for flinging in the water, when what we really had planned for the day..weather pending…was an elephant ride through river and brush.

22. Things I personally found out : I have vertigo, but I’m not that bothered.

Long haul flights are a stroll in the park, with the inflight TVs (they’ve probably had for the last twenty years, but I didn’t know about.)

14hr train and bus journeys can be strangely soothing.

The smog in South American Cities will make you blind if you have sensitive eyes.

And the altitude in some South American cities will make you sick with headaches for the duration of your stay, if you are that way inclined, which I was, and luckily the others weren’t. But this will in no way curtail your enjoyment in any manner, provided you consume plenty paracetamol throughout the day, for your entire stay, at a local cost of one dollar per tablet, so take hundreds, literally ;-)

Without Pia’s now famous navigational skills (we got off many a bus/train/plane in many hitherto obscure towns and cities, and walked to the hotel without a guidebook, no problem,).

I would still be standing at Heathrow Airport looking for check in. Seriously, you could spin me round in my own flat and I wouldn’t find the bedroom. But I’m not that bothered.

23. Best doughnuts : Bangkok Best cakes : South America

24. Funniest National Anthem : Equador

25. Total Cost of all the above : Totally irrelevant, and totally worth it. Yes you could buy a semi in the north of England somewhere..but I know which I would prefer…no offence to anyone in the North of England( thats good labour country..that is )

So ‘that’s that’, as the hitman said to the figure on the floor.

It’s Scotland next week, but that doesn’t count either.

This city is as wonderful and colourful, and as vibrant as ever, and a whole lot cleaner than when I first saw it, back in 1990. Thankfully, it will never be clean and airbrushed enough to get into the ‘best quality cities to live in list’. This place is way too interesting to join the likes of Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Munich ( where airbrushing was invented, incidentally) in that now infamous list. Any offence to folk living in those towns is as intentional as this list is to those who live in what I would call real cities. Real cities, being what they were designed to be..diverse.

This place always struck me, as the only city of its size, that could easily make, even London seem as trully cosmopolitan as say, Norwich. Again, no offence to anywone who hails from Norwich, but any city that can boast, Chinatown, Little Italy, Harlem, Greenwich Village, Spanish Harlem, deserves a place on some kind of list…though the nature of the list depends entirely on your point of view

On the first full day we took in The Empire State Building, which went down very well especially since the dreaded queues didn’t transpire. This was the only major excursion type place on the entire trip that did not accept press cards.

Grand Central Station, check. Roosevelt Island, check. The USS Intrepid, home to Concord, check. Central Park, check. Times Square, check. Greenwich Village, check. Brooklyn Bridge, check. Staten Island Ferry, check…..Really must see Dusseldorf, maybe not, check

One of the quickest ways down the Empire State Building.

The week long travel pass we got, was cheaper than a day pass cost in Sydney (which also happens to be number ten on that famous list of best quality cities to live in….I can assure you that the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ is entirely erroneous in this instance I’m afraid. No disrespect to public transport users in Sydney, intended.)

I used to be in awe of those who could run round Central Park, and I really wanted to try it this time, just for fun, but it was too hot, and our hotel was downtown..so it was never gonna happen. But I was glad to know I could.

I told Sebastian and Isabella that I used to come here alone quite a lot, and all that was missing was them.

A funny thing happened on the way through Washington Square.

Five or six, twenty to thirty something men, were sitting on the front steps of a brownstone, when one of them looked at us and said ‘Man. You got it all’.

‘What are you talking about,’ I said. He pointed at Pia and Sebastian and Isabella and said ‘thats what I’m talking about, you got the whole world in your hands right there.’

And then together they sang the chorus of that song for fun as we walked by.

I wonder if that would happen in any of the ‘top ten best quality cities in which to live.’

It is moments like that, for me anyway, that render all bad things, meaningless, however temporarily. And fleeting they may be, they still resonate through time.

Of course I still remember being spat on, my first day at school, and I remember the old lady going into hysterics when I tried to get into the same lift as her at Anderson Bus Station in Glasgow, when I was six. And I recall being dragged to and detained at Cranstonhill Police Station, Glasgow, along with my sister, me aged six, her aged 7, getting our finger prints taken, shown the inside of a cell. The same cells I would frequent later, during all the unpleasantless that surrounds being arrested one hundred times or more, for the crime of representing the best probability of a guilty verdict when presented before an anachronism in a wig. Oh… and the countless interviews, where the panel figuratively got up one by one to raise the bar as I sat down patiently trying to answer, unanswerable questions. Despite being dux of my school, never being afraid of books, the task of drumming up one unanswerable question after another, was still quite a feat initself. ( “Why is a tax on rich people any fairer than a tax on poor people”, unquote, from an Economics professor at Oxford, or “Whats your position on racism”, unquote, from a Sociology professor at Oxford, kinda thing ). Yes, the gatekeepers did their jobs very well. The good news is, it was all such a long time ago, most of those bastards are probably dead now. And demons have been laid to rest.

And the overall insignificance of all the above, is as plain to me, as it is to anyone, including those singers on the sidewalk.

To say I have been profoundly affected by the last seven months would be an understatement, but then again I was profoundly affected every time , we got a sizzling summer summer in Scotland (once), and when Stephen Hendry won the snooker world champiuonship (seven) and Celtic won the league (countless) ;-)

We had a great time.

Life is what you make it as you say.

I’ve just got way too good a memory. And thats great cos’ you remember all the good things too. And maybe that damnable, immovable failsafe in my dna, which prohibits me from overlooking injustices as I see them, isn’t that bad a trait after all.

London next, but I used to live there so it definitely doesn’t count on the trip itinerary (UK spelling) /itinery (US spelling).

On leaving Yosemite, for Las Vegas, Nevada, we went from one extreme to another. No bears, no waterfalls, and no giant Sequoia, not real ones anyway…but the queenbeds, 42 ” flatsecreen TV, and swimming pools, were a welcome treat.

Pia guided us in right on time to meet Carolyn, Denis, Louise, John, Eva, and Jack, who had just flown over from Los Angeles, on their holiday from the Highlands of Scotland. We ate at one of the umpteem eateries in the Mirage, and hooked up at the pool. The children got on great as we saw the local sights. They took the helicopter tour, John for his sins, took in the RFC convention;-) and a lovely time was enjoyed by all. Denis came out on top at Roulette, and I did fifty odd miles on a bike, albeit in the gym. Carolyn took the little ones to see the dolphins, lions and tigers.

And then they were gone…back to Scotland…and we went back to the pool. On our last night I took Sebastian to the ‘Titanic’ exhibition at the Luxor and he was was mesmerised.

Then, it was time to head to Utah..and it´s own unique collection of stunning National Parks.

Oh and yes and I did meet two American’s who thought “Scotland was part of Netherlands, in Scandanavia”. I told them their geography was pretty good.

In Utah, Bryce Canyon, we got a log cabin…the good kind…with running water and a TV, and no bears outside, like Yosemite.

Bryce Canyon National Park reached almost 9000 ft above sea level in places, but we took it slow and avoided any negative altitude effects.

The weather was perfect, very sunny but not too hot. And Sebastian and Isabella got sworn in as Junior Rangers, after completing their environmentally conscious asignments.

They answered questions on features of the Park, and on what they saw and liked best, and pledged to uphold the rules that keep the place safe and tidy. So I was not allowed to stray off the paths to get the best pictures

It’s amazing how each of the National Parks so far, each have their own unique set of natural wonders. The red rocks and rolling vista here, are so amazing, even the dinosaurs once considered it home.

The Arches National Park had all the breathtaking vistas from the Westerns I like so much, and problably meant the most to me personally so far. Our Junior Rangers ‘took the pledge’ again, and enjoyed completed the booklet on the rock formations and climate and wildlife.

At Canyonlands I saw more of the scenery that makes for the backdrop to some of my favourite films. We saw 2000 year old rock paintings by the first hunter gatherer Indians who settled here. The layers of history are etched everywhere in the fabric of the huge red rock formations.

We joined a raft down the Colorado River, and got pretty wet in the process. Thunder broke and luckily we were almost back at base. The rapids are on a scale of 1 to 5+, and we only reached a 2.5 in the high waters, and that was just about wet enough for me. The 4- wheel, 1 hour drive up the north face of the Canyon rim, provided all the proof I needed that I do have vertigo.

Next day, we found some lovely cakes (plural) and relaxed and enjoyed Pia’s birthday, back at the town of Moab after the dizzy, and damp heights of the Colorado River, and it’s surrounding peaks.

And so, to monumental, Monument Valley, the epicentre of Western lore. The place where Hollywood and history will be forever entwined, as the symbolic backdrop to the Old West, rivalled only by the Statue of Liberty as the cornerstone of the American dream.

Yes, it’s no secret, I like westerns; not the Cowboy and Indian claptrap, not even the more enlightend Civil War genre, but the unaldulterated righting of wrong, riding off into the sunset claptrap

Sergio Leone’s ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’ being one of my favourite films, I kept my trigger finger on the i-pod and listened to Ennio Morricone’s operatic soundtrack, as the stagecoach rumbled along the red dust floor.

The Easter Island heads were out of the ordinary for sure, Angkor Wat too was clearly put together very nicely, and Machu Picchu was a feat of endeavour surpassed only by the Pyramids, IMHO, but the prospect of high priests and peasants toiling to worship false idols, didn’t quite stir me the way this multi-million year old valley, welcomed dinausars, Navajo, settlers, peddlers, and outlaws alike.

And anyway, as the editor in the penultimate scene of ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance’, tells it. ‘This is the West, sir. ‘When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.’

I marvelled at b+w pictures of Monument Valley, in dusty old editions of Encyclopedia Britannica as a boy ( perhaps the only pages I recall ), long before I’d ever seen a western. And there can’t be many, finer, more evocative gateways between the old and new frontier.

After centuries of exploitation, it was fitting to see that all the hotels and stuff, in the prime Valley area, are Navajo, owned and run. There were no middlemen, and no crass tourist mafia like in Southern Thailand.

The overall value, range and quality of loacations, and activities, here in the USA, is astonishing, especially with the National Parks. Unless intent on visitting family, or surfing of course, or the goldmines, which attracted me, I think if world travellers did their research, Australia would really struggle in the long haul traveller stakes.

The Glen Canyon Dam near Page, Arizona was the mega 20th Century concrete dam structure, I have allways wanted to see. These modern piles of bricks, can be just as impressive as ancient ones, especially when all the obvious benefits can be combined with minimum upheaval to the environment.

Glen Canyon Dam

Here too, the highways here were devoid of the hundred mile long trails of garbage, clearly intended to ignite forest fires, that were found alongside every major outback route in Australia. Instead though, there seemed to be frequent, exit lanes to penitentiaries, correctional facilities, state detention centres, and federal prisons, and anything else with bars on.

They do like their prisons here. And with approaching 2.5 million inmates, it really is big business. The incarceration rate rocketted the minute Regan got elected in 1980, when the total inmate population was 0.5 million. It doubled during his 8 years in office. To put that into perspective, it took 40 years, from 1940 to 1980, for the previous total to double. The trend only slightly slowed down in the mid nineties, when surprise, surprise, a Democrat, by the name of Bill Clinton entered the Whitehouse. The construction, maintenance, policing and guaranteed flow of customers, enabled by the equally vast judical gravy train, make the whole industry bigger than General Motors. To put it into greater perspective, China would need to have 10 000 000 folk in prison to match the US per capita prison population. And in fact it only has 1.5 million prisoners, out of its approx 1.3 Billion population.

Next stop Grand Canyon.

And it is predictably phenomenal. I find it absolutely amazing that you can stay in a wonderful en-suite lodge, with fridge, flat screen TV, and internet access, within an Olympian’s stones throw of the Grand Canyon, for less than at an obscure Australian campsite, which charges extra for tennis and $20 for internet, and where only the mosquitos come free of charge.

Grand Canyon National Park was probably the most accessible, and most spectacular. Our antiquated little camera could not do it no justice at all, but we tried

There are talks, tours, video screenings, water fountains, and gas powered shuttle buses between prime sights, all free.

The stars at night were dreamlike, and the walks along the south rim were spectacular, even without the fences.

And after, the walks, talks, and sights, a little thing called the World Cup becomes centre stage.

And then, all too quickly, and after some 2947 miles, it was back to Phoenix for an early flight to New York.

Hoodoos i Bryce Canyon

by night

Mirage´s vulkan i udbrud

Bjørn i Yosemite
